Founder's Note
Since its inception in 1989, Gallery Espace has fostered a conversation around the arts, publishing important catalogues to accompany its exhibitions such as Drawing ’94 & Sculpture ’95; organising addas and informal spaces for discussions involving artists, poets, curators, and critics. Our efforts have been geared towards enriching and broadening the space for creative and critical discourse in the Indian Art Landscape, drawing on the Gallery’s 35-year long journey in the promotion of Indian art.
Over the years, I have foregrounded the importance of arts education – the possibilities it holds in going beyond, pushing the register, and changing the conversation on art in the country. In today’s art landscape, I believe that there is a need to create more and more space where we curate and contextualise artworks, and artists. Such space will ensure that art goes beyond “commodity” and becomes a living manifestation of beauty and depth of vision.
ArteSpace is that space – a space of scholarship, education, and creative exploration; where the work of art will come alive through writing. I am happy to be presenting the first edition of this E-Journal of the Arts : “Anthology”
