It requires a deep and intentional comprehension of space in order to bring about balance, whether one is inhabiting the space with objects and elements, or exploring the void. ‘ma’ is a meaningful Japanese concept that signifies the space in between; it is the understanding of the emptiness or silence in an artwork – whether a song, a film, a painting – that is as important as the rest of composition. In this contemporary milieu of intense productivity and the quintessential race ‘against time’ the quiet poetry of Tanmoy Samanta’s work draws us into these liminal spaces, where new paths are illuminated and dimensions are altered. He creates vast worlds within which the protagonists, that could be voluminous and linear forms, objects and their shadows, fall steadily into relational orbits as if dancing in slow motion.

The exhibition sets the stage for newer spatial forms and material explorations that emerge as extensions to Samanta’s longstanding engagement with concepts of time and transition, the conundrums of human existence, and the spectrum of meaning from fragment to wholeness. The paintings, collages, and book-
sculptures present a compelling intersection of internal and external landscapes, redefining the physical capacity of paper as a medium of translucence and fluidity.

where does the light fall, but in the spaces, in-between; in moments of pause and silence, in memory, and whispers from the past.
