tradition
The Art of Matter
by Renu modi
As trade with
the us increases, it's crucial for indian businessmen to
be comfortable with art and to be able to discuss it intelligently.
To that end, I will be writing a series of articles about important
3rt and sculpture that everyone should know. My
articles about imporant art and sculpture that everyone should
know. My goal is to ensure that when a SundayET reader interacts
with an American counterpart, he wiUhave relevant topics
in art to discuss.
Contrary to popular opinion, the us is more than just the
land of baseball, capitalism, and fast food. Contemporary
American art is vibrant and compelling, much like the nation itself,
and can almost be seen as a series of revolts against tradition.
Most fumous of all is probably the work of Jawon pollock, who
placed canvases on the floor or the wall and poured the paint
on, ! sometimes using a knife or a stick instead of a brush. His
work led the way for other Abstract Expressionist artists to follow
and can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in . New York, the
Art Instinlte of Chicago, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Another key abstract artist is Willem de Kooning. who was born
in the Netherlands and mil-de his way to the US in 1926.
He began by painting still life and figure compositions, and went
on to experiment with abstraction, using biomorphic shapes and
simple geometric compositions. You GIn see his works at the Fine
Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Guggenheim Museum and
the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New Yolk. the Museum of Fine
Arts in Boston.. and the Phillips Collection and the National
Gallery of art in Wash ington. DC.
Ifabstract art is not your cup of tea, have a lookat the works
of George Wesley Bellows. Born in Columbus, Ohio, George Bellows
was a major American artist of the early 20th century. known for
his paintings of boxing match figures and for his
lithographs.
Or get to know Andy Warhol, whose name is synonymous with
Pop .Art. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. .
His wolks Can be viewed at Guggenheim Museum; Andy Warhol Museum
in Pittsburgh. & Baltimore Museum of art Baltimore.
