Art
is inherent to the Indian psyche. From pre-historic to classical
and now modern, it presents itself in many diverse avatars and
springs from a variety of inspirations. Contemporary art is currently
organized and promoted by defined institutions, amongst the most
distinct of which is Gallery Espace, set up in 1989 by Mrs. Renu
Modi. M.F.Husain stimulated its establishment, inspiring the suggestion
of a gallery that would focus on Indian artistic form and aesthetics.
The Gallery Logo was designed by Husain himself and continues
to lend an effective identity. The motivation provided by the
great artist is further reflected in the design of Mrs. Modi’s
residence that stands as a treasured sculptural installation,
besides him also launching the Gallery space with an autobiographical
show.
From its early inception when the circulation of art was limited
to informal efforts, Espace has grown into a commanding three-storey
space conducting the business of art as a structured scheme. The
Gallery has continuously endeavored to nurture art in all its
forms and mediums ensuring and sustaining the richness of Indian
art. Sculpture, photography and installation art are constantly
promoted with the specific intention of bringing them at par with
other forms of fine art. Talents from the worlds of journalism
and culture have also been provided a much-needed platform.
Espace is further recognized for its undeterred passion and balance
between true art and commerce. Gallery owner, Renu Modi believes
that while auction houses concentrate essentially on sales and
purchases, it is the Galleries that take on the challenging task
of nurturing and promoting art, the institutions that take risks
and develop talent.
Commissioning works of art that would eventually develop into
series and collections of specific thematic inclinations was a
concept pioneered by Espace. The Gallery also evolved the novel
scheme of bringing the best of Indian modern art to discerning
audiences around the world, thereby initiating the trend of globalizing
art. Its first venture at an international exhibition was as early
as 1992. In the coming years, it intends to expend greater efforts
to reach out to wider audiences and assert a place for Indian
art at International forums.
